American photographer inspires Bill Frisell's latest album
Legendary portraitist Mike Disfarmer was a resident studio photographer in Heber Springs, Arkansas.
In the defining times in which the Great Depression yielded to World War II, he captured the faces of the American heartland.80 years on, introduced to Disfarmer's work by an acquaintance, guitarist Bill Frisell set to work scoring a slideshow of the photographer's images.
Frisell's "21st-century string band" was made up of mandolin, fiddle, acoustic bass and his own electric guitar.
The album Disfarmer, which incorporates his unique use of Americana — folk, country and western, became part of The Disfarmer Project and has gone on to receive widespread critical acclaim.
