Mashup wishlist granted
Way back in 2004, underground hip hop (now uber) producer Dangermouse got EMI's knickers in a twist when he put together a mashup of The Beatles White Album with Jay-Z's Black Album, creating the much lauded Grey Album. At the time the art of the bootleg or mashup was very much in its infancy and kick started a glut of unexpected imaginary collaborations between artists.
In the last couple of years the mashup scene has been bubbling away nicely with DJ's such as The Nice Up Soundsystem, J-Star, & Taggy Matcher knocking out tunes to rock the party.
UK beatsmith Bullion has come up trumps this week, putting out an inspired fantasy collaboration between The Beach Boys classic long player Pet Sounds and the legendary producer J Dilla aka Jay Dee whose untimely death in 2006 shocked the hip hop community.
Using Jay Dee's loose limbed and swung out beatmaking style as inspiration, Bullion has created a match made in mashup heaven.
